Project overview
The project involved the construction of a steel combi-pile commercial pier, complete with an access road and hardstanding, at a former mineral extraction site on Mull to facilitate the export of round timber.
The project included:
Pre-construction particulate and noise surveys to protect a nearby salmon farm.
Construction of an access road and hardstanding area.
Driving 1,200mm diameter steel combi-piles to form the pier structure.
Installation of 920m of Macalloy tie bars to secure the pile walls.
Infilling the combi-piles with structural grade concrete.
Installation of precast concrete copes, general infill, and surrounding rock armour.
Fitting of anodes for cathodic protection to the outer wall in the tidal zone.
Final surfacing with 600m3 of ready-mix concrete and installation of a weighbridge after a one-year settlement period.
Key challenges and successes
To significantly reduce costs, 30,000 m³ of rock was blasted at a nearby site, saving the client considerable expense on aggregates and transportation. The material was processed on-site using crushers and screeners to produce specified 6A fill, which was used to fill to the mid-tide level. This work was conducted while also monitoring and repositioning piles that had experienced slippage on the rockhead.
