Project overview
This project involved the comprehensive internal and external refurbishment of the north, east, and west wings of the Abbey estate. The work focused on modernising all guest, staff, and communal facilities while also carrying out essential upgrades to the building’s historic windows and external doors.
The project included:
Complete internal refurbishment of all guest and staff accommodation units.
Refurbishment of the communal refectory, server, and catering areas.
Extensive refurbishment of the existing sash and case windows.
Replacement of the external entrance doors for each of the three wings.
Key challenges and successes
Structural repairs, including internal lime rendering to address water ingress through Abbey walls, were completed on time and on budget despite logistical challenges due to the remote location and winter ferry disruptions on Iona.
