Maritime Hub ‘Egg Shed’, Ardrishaig

Client: Scottish Canals

Location: Ardrishaig

Project overview

This project consisted of the careful and extensive refurbishment and extension of a derelict building known locally as the “Egg Shed” in Ardrishaig to form a new Maritime Hub at the entrance of the Crinan Canal. This is an historically important building in the heart of Ardrishaig.

Visitors are invited to learn the stories of ‘Britain’s Most Beautiful Shortcut’ within the exhibition space of The Egg Shed and have the opportunity to purchase a souvenir in the shop. With artefacts from Scottish Canals displayed alongside items supplied by the local community.

The works comprised asbestos removal, a structural timber and steel frame over clad with proprietary standing seam, zinc cladding, aluminum proprietary curtain walling windows and doors. Electrical works included small power, exposed containment, suspended and recessed lighting, plumbing installations included hot and cold-water to the kitchen and sanitary ware to staff and public toilets. The floors were finished with a micro concrete screed throughout, overlaid on underfloor heating complete with monolithic dado walling. The fit out included bespoke joinery including all reception and sales counters, display units and kitchen installations.

Externally the works included all surface and foul drainage, hard and soft landscaping to the access road, parking and overspill car parking areas.

Key challenges and successes

Condition of existing building, limited access to rear of building due to proximity to Loch, budgetary constraints, multiple funders.
