Employee Stories

I’ve been with TSL for over 25 years and I’m a Foreman/Site Manager on Mull. I joined when there were only 8 people working for the company. I was asked to come and work for 3 months over the winter and I’ve been here ever since. The impression of the work ethic was good. Andy’s mother used to the wash the gloves at weekends for the next week and we used an old van or Andy’s mother’s car for work. Things have certainly modernised and moved on!

My days can be quite varied depending on what we are working on. I open up on site, do a daily brief of site activities and tell the team what’s going. I pitch in to help with the jobs and make sure all jobs and tasks are done safely and correctly. I also order materials and organise sub-contractor visits and oversee everything being done.

I like the variety of work and the locations we work in. The best things about the job are that it’s good to be working on Mull where I live and the team I work with.

I am TSL’s Commercial Assistant and I have worked with TSL for 6 years now. My role involves supporting various teams including estimating, our quantity surveyors and working closely with our accounts team, as well as liaising with subcontractors and co-ordinating tender submissions.

A usual week will include adding payments to our accounts system for our quantity surveyors, managers and accounts department, dealing with queries from subcontractors about upcoming payments, adding new subcontractors to the system and verifying their company/individual details. I also ensure insurance certificates are up to date and assist with tender submissions, making sure that all information is uploaded and submitted on time.

I enjoy the variety I my role and working with different departments. Hands down the people are the best thing about working for TSL. It can be frantic at times so knowing that there is always someone you can call on to help is great.

I’m a Site Manager with the company and I am now in my 10th year with TSL. I began my journey in 2015 as a Site Joiner and quickly progressed to the role of Site Manager.

My role involves a wide range of responsibilities to ensure smooth and efficient site operations. On a daily and weekly basis, I ensure that the team has all the necessary materials, information, and support required to carry out their tasks and keep site works progressing as planned. I’m also responsible for maintaining a safe working environment for both our team and subcontractors. My duties include reviewing site drawings and specifications, ordering materials, raising queries with architects and clients, preparing for both site and internal meetings, conducting quality control inspections, and resolving any issues that arise on-site.

I genuinely enjoy the paperwork side of site management, especially tasks like conducting quality inspections and making sure everything is in place to allow the team to work efficiently and safely.

To be completely honest, I genuinely enjoy my job and the company I work for — I wouldn’t still be here after 10 years if that weren’t the case.

I am the Payroll Co-ordinator and my role within the company is to ensure everyone is paid correctly and on time. I have worked with TSL for nearly four years and started in an admin support role within the site offices. This provided a great learning experience in what is involved in construction and how TSL operates. I then moved into HR and Payroll. I had worked for years in finance, but never within construction. I was interested in working for TSL as the construction industry is vital to the development of the West Highlands and Islands and I knew it would provide job security.

My job entails making sure I have the correct information to pay employees, by processing timesheets, assessing absences and managing deductions. Payroll is done in real time, so it’s crucial to ensure everything that is going through is correct as it affects information going to HMRC which impacts employees’ incomes and taxes. I also assist in reporting and analysing employee costings for HR compliance. There’s a lot of responsibility with my role as paying people accurately and on time is really important and fosters a positive work environment and maintains employee morale. I have recently completed a diploma in payroll management and I hope that this can enable me to develop the role further.

I am also part of the ESG team which considers the impacts of TSL’s activities on the environment and local communities. I know I’m lucky as I am based locally and have flexibility in my hours which ensures a good life work balance. Also, I like working within a smaller company as you get more opportunities to do things that you wouldn’t get to do in larger corporations.

My name is Viktors and I am an apprentice joiner. I have been with TSL for nearly two years. I knew Stephen Young beforehand, and he told me what a very good company it is and encouraged me to apply. I started out as a Joiner’s Labourer but shortly after starting TSL gave me the chance of doing an adult apprenticeship which is great. I am learning from tradesmen joiners and working on all kind of joinery jobs. This let’s me get the stuff I need for my college portfolio – I attend on block release in Inverness. I want to be a time served joiner.

I pretty much do something different every day which makes my day exciting. The best thing about my job is that most of my colleagues are friendly and helpful and my boss is very good as well.

I’m a machine operator and I’ve worked with TSL for over 30 years. I was the first dedicated excavator operator recruited all those years ago. I liked the idea of working for a local family business which is what attracted me to the company and this is still the case.

My role is wide and varied and I could be installing forestry roads one week, then the following week working on one of the many hydro schemes in the mountains around Lochaber or Mull, then changing to work on a housing development, clearing land, installing roads and foundations or the final landscaping works. I use a variety of different excavators from micro excavators to 20T excavators, depending on the projects and there’s different technologies with each machines.

I like the variety of work- no two days are the same. I get to use the different skills I’ve gained over the years, using different machines in different situations and projects.

The best thing is the core of guys that have been with the company over many years- this is the biggest factor for me. I really enjoy my work and the close relationships I got to have with these guys and Andy and Naomi.

I am the Planning Manager and my role is to visit potential new construction sites which are out to tender and, in conjunction with other members of the construction / commercial team, create tender and construction programmes for the projects. Another part of my role is to visit sites currently under construction and carry out progress reviews to ensure that works are being completed on or ahead of time. When required, I also give training to site team members on using planning software.

I have worked with TSL for over 7 years. I originally started work with TSL to allow me to live and work in the Argyll area and have found that TSL have more of a family feel rather than a corporate one, which does make a difference to the work experience and makes it an enjoyable company to work for.

My week entails visiting sites and gathering information to allow me to create programmes such as studying construction drawings, applying for, and reviewing, utility drawings, reviewing tender documentation, and creating working programmes.

I enjoy collaborating with people from the design team and client side, as well as collaborating with members of the TSL Team and enjoy the variation of different jobs we undertake. The best thing about working for TSL Contractors is the company is located in Argyll & Bute which has some of the most scenic landscapes and shorelines in Scotland, which provides a stunning commute to work, together with working with a team of people who have a vast variety of experience in the construction industry and who work with a positive attitude.

I’m a Working Foreman and I’ve worked here for 3 and a half years. I’ve got to admit it’s been quick but that is because of how busy I have been and that’s the way I like it.

My day entails getting our employees and other trades working in a safe and productive manner, sorting out any issues as best I can and planning upcoming works. I am hands on when needed to be but also do different types of paperwork, Tool Box Talks, liaising with contractors and clients etc.

I enjoy my role the most when we are really busy and having to push work along, answering questions with the right answer and advice.

I would say some of the best things about working for TLS is working for a company with ambitions to be bigger and better, but also who look after their employees through training, wages and personal problems. They are always trying to help employees.

I am the Office Manager on Mull. I started working for TSL as Office Support Coordinator nearly 4 years ago. Living on the isle of Mull, TSL was and remains one of the biggest employers on the island. I’d heard some really positive things about working for the company and when a position opened up, I decided to go for it. Following an interview and discussions about my experience in running my own business, the admin role that was originally advertised grew arms and legs and was adapted to encompass a bit more than was originally planned. The role then continued to evolve, and I became Office Manager. That was 3 years ago and now the role has evolved even further.

One of the things I love about my job is that no two hours, days or weeks are the same. One day I can be fixing generators, rodding drains or helping with groundworks to get a project over the line, the next I am putting together final documents for clients, creating websites or speaking to school children.

I am responsible for organising accommodation, flights and ferries for the entire company: we work in some pretty remote areas which means about 30 – 60 people working away from home week on week.

Another part of my role is marketing. I am responsible for our social media pages and I have been working with colleagues to create our new website. I create content and artwork for any marketing material that is required, such as recruitment ads, brochures for clients, exhibition & career fair material, press releases etc, as well as internal info like posters & newsletters. Another part of the marketing side of things is attending careers days and visiting schools with colleagues to assist with presentations or activities. I am responsible for sourcing and designing exciting TSL branded give-aways to take to these events and to give to various stakeholders.

A really nice part of my job is producing length of service certificates and arranging vouchers. It’s just a really nice feeling knowing that we are doing something to make someone’s day that little bit more special. I also really love organising TSL’s social events.

Another big chunk of my day involves supporting the construction and civils teams, assisting them in whatever they need me to do which could be producing manuals, site drawings, health and safety files, minutes of meetings, organising calendars, reviewing portals and reporting on planning and building warrants for Mull, Iona and surrounding areas, organising community benefits for Mull projects, liaising with colleagues to produce detailed case studies for projects and all sorts of other things.

The rest of the time I am doing general Office Manager type duties such as keeping on top of all facilities and safety aspects for the Mull office and sites, dealing with or fielding phone, email and face to face enquiries, dishing out deliveries, keeping on top of staff welfare and supporting our Aggregates department when required.

I love that the variety within my role and the ‘family feel’ at TSL means I get to interact with pretty much everyone in the company in one way or another and that’s great because we are mostly all very cool!

The best thing about working for TSL is definitely the people. I love the team spirit here and how we all muck in together and do whatever it takes to achieve results.

I’m the Contracts Manager on the Isle of Mull and I’ve been with TSL for 15 months. I’ve always wanted to retire to Mull but never thought the opportunity would present itself to work in construction on the island so when the chance came along for this role, I grabbed it! It’s such a stunning location.

I really enjoy the variety of the work and the problem solving required with the logistics of building on the west coast islands. Each day is always different – I can be meeting potential clients, pricing small works, managing multiple projects, clearing snagging items from projects and supporting other members of the construction team all in a week’s work.

I ran my own company for eighteen years before embarking on a site management role. I enjoy the feeling of being a part of something and not just a number in a large organisation. To work within a family run business is very different to working in a larger building company. Plus, having access to the senior management and company owners is not common in construction but I feel it makes a difference. Also to work for a company that cares for the area and community that it belongs to is important to me.

I work in Oban in the operations department as Operations Support Co-ordinator. I joined TSL because I was interested in a career within the construction industry, having had some experience of maintenance and restoration projects in my previous employment.

I have been with TSL for almost 4 years. For the first two and a half years I worked in the procurement team as a Cost Clerk and I’ve been in my current role for a year and a half.

My job is really varied and includes providing support to sites with all things plant and welfare, pricing and ordering plant and tools, reporting plant utilisation and logging plant defects and communicating with suppliers. I also am responsible for purchasing small tools and carrying out Small Tool PAT Testing, issuing survey equipment, lifting gear and arranging calibration and repairs. No two days are the same. I really like the feeling of being part of a team and playing a part in helping to get the job done.

I recently completed an HNC in Construction Management and it gave me a good overview and taster of different roles and processes within the construction industry. I could go on and study further but currently I have no plans to as I’m very happy in my current role.

The best thing about the job is the great people. I like going to work and I go home feeling I have achieved something every day.

I have worked for TSL for almost a year now as a civil engineering apprentice. It’s a four year graduate apprenticeship course and during this time I have college blocks at UHI in Inverness and I also learn and work on site.

I travel from site to site and set out for all building requirements which includes drainage runs and kerb lines, as well as also carrying out tasks on the computer and using the technology provided.

I enjoy the variety of the tasks I undertake and all the difference experiences I have every week. I get to see and work on everything from housing sites to holiday caravan sites and substations. I hope to finish my apprenticeship and become a fully qualified civil engineer.

I’m the Procurement Manager with TSL and I have been with the company for 8 years. I wanted to work in a company which still had the “family” feel, and have my thoughts and ideas listened to rather than being a number. The variety of sectors that TSL worked in also interested me as it meant that I would always be learning about new technologies and construction methods.

The procurement role in a multi sector company is so diverse that no two days are the same. We can order multi million pounds worth of timber kits, to ductile iron pipes and then toilet roll for site! We are constantly reviewing procurement procedures and ensuring that our supply chain is compliant, whilst also sourcing products that fit with our company beliefs in sustainability and minimising our carbon footprint. The procurement role is ensuring we get the best price, but also the best service so that we can provide our clients with the best quality of product and make the company money. We are continually reviewing material requirements with site managers, project managers, quantity surveyors and estimators which is imperative to the success of the build.

You work with a lot of people in a procurement role, from clients, to subcontractors, supply chain and our own different departments, and communication is so important. You are part of a team, on a joint mission to build a successful project. I enjoy the diversity of my role and the best thing about working for the company is the people. TSL always want to build the best quality and provide our clients with a product of the highest standard and that is something I am proud to be part of.

Duncan Morrison

My name is Duncan Morrison and I am a Quarry Manager on Mull. I look after the hard rock quarry and the sandpit in relation to production of our various products. It’s a hands-on role, so I could be screening or crushing material one day and delivering the same product to our customers the next.

I have worked for TSL for around 9 years, although I also did a couple of years before this.  The first time I was here it was as a lorry driver hauling timber and that’s what drew me here. The second time was the same and I then progressed into the role I do now,

The good thing about the job is the variety and the fact you are pretty much left to get on with it. If any queries arise now and again I can speak with Andy. TSL is an easy to work with, approachable family owned company and the fact the island of Mull is so scenic is just a bonus.

I’m the Construction Manager for Mull and surrounding areas overseeing our civils and building projects. My role includes making sure we are meeting the company’s standards for quality, health and safety, and general operating procedure, as well as meeting clients and getting involved in the tendering, programming and resourcing for civils and building projects. We work a lot with local businesses, architects and residential clients to help them realise their projects through funding budgets and feasibility, providing value engineering and general expertise with procurement, design and logistics etc.

I have worked for a few large contractors in varied projects around Scotland including for nuclear facilities,  hospitals, colleges, care homes, industrial parks, and factory facilities.  After a spell abroad on a Bridge Program, I came back to Scotland and worked for one of my former employers in the central belt. A position then came up with TSL on Mull and I had always enjoyed working around the Scottish coast and, being an Islander myself, it was an easy step to take. I joined TSL as a Site Engineer in 2009 at the Shillinghill housing development in Tobermory and the whole family followed to Mull shortly afterwards.

My favourite part of the job has always been the variety of projects we undertake, which is an interesting mix of new build, restoration, marine projects, forestry services etc. It’s never been boring or repetitive and although its often challenging, it’s always been extremely rewarding to  deliver notable projects in the community you live in on a regular basis, closely liaising and forming relationships with individuals and organisations that help to keep this community thriving.

TSL Mull is a great place to work. We have a small but dedicated team of fully employed operatives and staff, as well as others that we call on to help out when needed. We are also able to call on resource from our Oban and Fort William teams when required.

Mull is a stunning location and is often taken for granted by those of us lucky enough to live and work here. I’m office based a lot of the time, so it’s always great to get out and about, meet our guys on site and get the crack, sometimes help a little, sometimes leave them to it but always be available to support when required.

I had been sub-contracting to TSL for a few years on different projects including Lochyside Housing Development and Coillte hydro scheme before coming on board as an employee over five years ago. Over these few years I built a good relationship with several managers and really liked the company’s vision and forward thinking, and felt it would be a good fit for TSL and me.

A typical week for me involves organising all things joiner-related, from the allocation of labour to different sites to meet their requirements or calling off materials to ensure all joiner works are in line with site programs. Checking and recording of different stages of builds and ensuring the quality is of a high standard is an ongoing and important part of my role, as well as motivating and supporting the joinery team and our apprentices.

Joinery has given me many opportunities, and I have made lifelong friends and been very lucky to be able to say that I have been part of a team that puts people in homes and allows families to grow and have a roof over their heads, and young people to get a place they call their own. It makes me especially proud and happy to see our apprentices grow from young people to fine young adults and develop a skill set that they can call upon to make a good honest living and make a difference in people’s lives. There’s nothing better than being able to help and support people to be the best version of themselves and enjoy a fulfilling and rewarding career in construction.

As a company TSL have been supportive and encouraged me to be able to do what I feel is right. They are always looking to give young people a chance in construction via apprenticeships and I really like how much the company values its workforce.

My role within TSL has evolved over the last 10 years from starting as Office Admin then becoming Office Manager and I am now the Training and Compliance Coordinator based out of the Oban office. I started with TSL in February 2015. I was visiting Scotland for the first time in 2011 for my sister-in-law’s wedding at Arrochar, and after doing some travelling around Kintyre, Oban, Stirling, Edinburgh and Melrose, I fell in love with the place so did the dangerous thing of looking at Rightmove as soon as we got home!

When the opportunity for TSL came up it was too good to miss, and I was lucky enough to be successful and moved here permanently 4 weeks later!

My job is really varied every day, dealing with training enquiries, finding courses, making bookings, issuing IHASCO course to any new starts, updating any training records on the Matrix and Passports and toolbox talk registers. I keep the QA system current with changes, formatting new or amending current documents and I maintain online Constructionline and Achilles portals. I also deal with day to day company IT and mobile phone queries as well as making sure the Oban office has the supplies to keep it going (mainly tea, coffee and milk!)

I am one of those strange people who enjoys getting stuck into an external Management System audit with either BSI or Achilles. Getting the consistent good results from these visits do make it worth it – these involve a fair amount of work in the background to ensure that our systems, procedures cogs are moving in the same direction. If there is a spreadsheet involved, then that will also make a task instantly better. Also, if someone is getting put through training that they’ve never done before, have perhaps been a bit apprehensive about doing it, and totally smash it that’s great!

My role is based in the HR and ESG department, and I work with Angela on community benefits and social value, and it’s good to see how many worthwhile initiatives TSL get involved in along with developing relationships with external parties such as the local High Schools, DYW schemes, and the wider local community groups. I’ve also recently gone through Greenhouse Gas Practitioner training and I am involved in the sustainability and net zero team.

TSL has changed since I first started as I think there was around 60 employees, but what I think is still at its core, is it’s not lost if’s feel of being a family business where you’re not just a payroll number. Your opinions are valid and you can see how your role fits into making the company a successful one.

I am TSL’s project manager on our Creag Dhubh substation project near Inverary. It’s a new substation for SSE which will improve the electricity network across Argyll and beyond.

I’ve worked with TSL for 6 months and started with the company specifically for this project. I’m originally from Taynuilt but have lived in Glasgow for the last 15 years. My wife and I decided we would prefer our kids to grow up in the countryside and I got a phone call out the blue asking if I’d be interested in the role. Working for TSL has allowed us to move up to Argyll and we bought a house in Taynuilt at Easter time so there’s no going back now!

My week largely consists of dealing with design queries and discrepancies and trying to get these sorted out so it doesn’t slow us down on site and reviewing our programme and making sure upcoming tasks and subcontractors are properly planned and able to be done safely.

The best thing about this role, and all other roles I’ve had in the construction industry are the people you meet on site. It doesn’t matter what is happening on site, there is always some craic to be had and it makes everyone’s weeks fly in. Second to that is watching a building appear in front of your eyes-it’s always really cool seeing it all come together after all the planning that goes into it.

For me it’s also fantastic to have the opportunity to live and work in arguably the most beautiful part of the country. Having spent the last 10 years sitting on the M8 whilst travelling to sites in Glasgow and Edinburgh, it is nothing short of joyous to have a 20 minute commute around Loch Awe every morning as the morning sun lights up Kilchurn castle. In addition, all the people I have met at TSL since starting have been really helpful and welcoming and it’s made the transition from Glasgow to Taynuilt really easy for us.

My name is Gordon Milne and I have worked as Finance Manager at TSL since 2022. I came across the vacancy by chance. My wife and I have long wanted to relocate to Mull and the vacancy allowed me to develop my career and move to this beautiful place. I am based at TSL’s office in Craignure, but I regularly visit the Oban office and occasionally visit our Skyhook site in Glenrothes.

I am part of a team of three people in Finance and I have received great support since I started. I manage the sales and purchase ledgers and assist with periodic processes, looking to assist the Head of Finance in his role. I previously had my own business, so I really appreciate working with the owners of TSL, who I see on a regular basis. I enjoy discussing the challenges and opportunities that arise, not always finance-related!

I look forward to my own role developing as TSL continues to grow, and assisting with making positive change.

I am the Senior Engineer and I started working with TSL in Feb 2020 after running my own business as a sole proprietor for 27 years. I was initially approached to look after some site investigation work on a project in Fort William and further discussions highlighted the company’s need for my skill set. I knew that becoming part of the TSL team would provide me with stable employment, which would also allow me to develop professionally.

I normally work from home but do a fair bit of travelling as and when onsite commitments require.  Over the last year, I have been involved with sites as far apart as Skipness in Kintyre to Ardessie in the Northwest Highlands. My role usually sees me spending about 50% of my time visiting sites and the other 50% in the office. Due to the geographical spread of the business, these site visits mean I do approximately 20,000 miles a year through what is arguably the most scenic part of the country. I usually try to make contact with the other engineers in the business at least once a week to find out how their jobs are coming along and if they need my support for any of the tasks they are undertaking. My daily routine usually involves writing a diary entry and or a detailed to-do list. As a child of the sixties, I still like to do this with pen and paper, which may be a bit odd given the amount of tech that’s at my disposal. However, as an appointed drone pilot and Civil Aviation Authority Accountable Manager I also use my diary entry to record where all the company’s drones are stored, who is looking after them and when they are flown.

I’m lucky that my home office is spacious enough to allow me to be surrounded by two water-cooled i9 desktop computers and a plethora of 27-inch monitors, printers, plotters and scanners.  I use all of this tech for processing survey data into 3d ground models and then to compile the results into earthwork quantities. These quantities are then used at the commercial core of the business for either tender estimation or monthly valuations.

I really enjoy helping to train other engineers, either in the use of UAVs or developing their knowledge of our surveying software and hardware. I also look after the company’s machine control systems and have enjoyed learning how to integrate their use into some of the larger earthwork jobs that we have completed recently.

After 27 years of self-employment, I may have a slightly different perspective on the things I appreciate about working for TSL. These are:- paid holidays, not having to do a VAT return late at night or during my holidays, no more PAYE payments and Companies House annual returns.  I’d like to pass on my thanks to all the TSL admin people who now complete all of this bureaucracy on my behalf. On a serious note, by far the best thing is being part of a team: self-employment can be a lonely place where help is often available but usually at a cost, and having a support network around you to help complete a task, or to ask for advice, is the thing I enjoy the most about my time at TSL.

I have worked with TSL as a Site Manager for the past eight years. I was looking for a fresh challenge in the management field when I was approached by TSL looking for a Site Manager for a new project in Oban. I accepted the offer and the rest is history…

My primary role is to ensure the safe and productive working of whatever site I am tasked with managing, from ensuring all operatives and subcontractors have the appropriate competencies to complete their given tasks to making sure that both subcontract packages and materials are ordered and called off in a timely manner. I also make sure all paperwork is up to date and filed appropriately and try to keep team morale as high as possible, which helps to maximise productivity from all trades. As a mental health first aider I like to ensure that everyone on my site is getting the support they deserve.

I enjoy meeting with people and watching a project evolve from initial ground works through to the completion of the project, be that domestic builds, commercial/industrial builds or civils/utility projects, all of which I have been involved in since commencing my career at TSL.

The business has always had that “family” feel to it. We all tend to know each other, and each other’s strengths, and this helps with delivering projects to clients’ satisfaction.

David Bruce

I’m TSL’s Operation Support Manager and I have worked with the company  for over 13 years. I moved from my previous job as I felt, having been there for almost 20 years, it was time for a change.

I started work with TSL as a Batching Plant Supervisor within Mobile concrete solutions, a role I undertook for around 7 years. I also spent a brief time working in the Mull Quarry operating plant, delivering plant and Quarry Materials. I then spent two years assisting with procurement before moving to my current role.

My role involves a wide range of responsibilities from pricing, ordering and delivering of hired plant to arranging movement of all plant to/from and between sites. I manage logistics, maintenance and servicing of LCV Fleet, ordering parts and allocating costs to lease companies. I am also responsible for managing our Plant Fitter’s daily workload and the daily movements of our support vehicle/driver. In addition, I process plant invoices, resolving any disputes and queries and ordering/source parts for plant maintenance department.

Every day brings a new challenge- it’s an extremely varied role working with many different people.

Working with TSL has taken me to work sites all over Scotland and occasionally further afield. I have enjoyed meeting and working with many different people. Most of the time now I am based in Oban and this allows me to enjoy a more balanced work/home life.
