New cottages on the Island of Seil

Client: TSL Contractors

Project Overview

TSL purchased an area of land at Balvicar on the island of Seil in 2009. We saw potential for new home development on the island, which lends itself to easy access from the Oban area — reached by the famous Atlantic Bridge from the mainland.

The cottages

Named after a small local township of Balvicar, the cottages were designed by Reynolds Architecture of Dingwall. The design replicates the walled quarryman's cottages that are typical of the area. Seil is one of the Slate Islands, where quarrying began in the seventeenth century.

The development consists of two rows of three cottages, each one and half storeys high, providing three bedrooms, a modern fitted kitchen and a semi open plan lounge and dining room. The properties benefit from Biomass heating in the form of wood pellet stoves, and an inline boiler for frost protection. West Highland slate roofs and walled gardens are just some of the traditional charming features that the cottages enjoy.
